School Holidays in the Lowveld

There’s a golden rule to planning a family trip that works for everyone, and it’s a rule that applies to multiple areas of life: nearness is everything. Not just nearness to the big attractions, but nearness to the backup plan, like the pool, the cinema, the restaurant that makes lunch easy and the shop that sells the thing someone forgot to pack. Get that right, and everything flows!

Here at Casterbridge Hollow Boutique Hotel in White River, we’ve figured this out, and April and May (with Easter and the long weekends that follow) are perfectly timed to put our theory to the test.

The backbone of every trip is, of course, where you stay. Set among sweet-smelling mango trees on what was once a working farm, Casterbridge Hollow is a boutique hotel built with families in mind. From wire-work baskets and hand-crafted tiles to fabric prints featuring proteas, all of our décor was locally made or sourced. It feels considered rather than generic, and when you’re spending a few days somewhere, details like that make all the difference.

For families, the layout immediately earns its keep. Rooms wrap around a gleaming rim-flow pool and lush courtyard garden. The pool becomes the gravitational centre of the trip, and make no mistake, a pool at this time of year is vital!

There are various room options available, but dedicated Family Rooms sleep four via an interleading door. A king-sized bed for the parents on one side, and two singles for the kids on the other. (Cots are available on request.)

Breakfast at the adjacent Magnolia Restaurant is included in your room rate, so once all the sleepy-heads are dressed and ready, pop across to fill your tummies up for a busy day’s exploring.

Worth knowing: Casterbridge Hollow is Mpumalanga’s first green hotel. Solar geysers, a reduced carbon footprint, a genuine commitment to treading lightly. It’s a good conversation to have with curious kids who ask good questions.

If there’s one thing that sets Casterbridge Hollow apart from other family-friendly accommodation near Kruger, it’s our location within Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre.

The Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre has a quirky range of independent shops, restaurants, service providers and an art gallery serenely nestled within shady gardens under gorgeous old trees – all within walking distance of your room. It has none of the bustle of a commercial shopping centre; it’s quieter, filled with unique and interesting shops and is a tranquil place in which to spend time.

The Vintage Motor Museum, a privately curated collection of lovingly maintained classic vehicles with all the engines in running condition, is a family drawcard. There’s something about a real 1960s car that captivates kids in a way that a photograph never quite manages to do. Leave a donation – it’s well worth it.

There’s also a small, privately owned cinema, showing movies often not screened by the mainstream cinemas, a spa for the weary adult who’s held the family together all week, a boutique gin distillery that offers tastings of locally crafted gins and a Belgian Chocolatier. (We recommend visiting both after the spa to ensure a full recuperation from family duties!) There are also antique shops, a vintage book seller, boutique clothing stores, and a handful of excellent restaurants and coffee shops to refuel without getting in your vehicle.

When it comes to things to do with kids in and around White River, there’s a lot to choose from.

Starting with the biggie: Kruger National Park is about 40 minutes away. As the day warms up, animals gravitate towards water sources, making for concentrated sightings. For added convenience, Casterbridge Hollow can arrange tailored half-day and full-day excursions for you, removing the burden of planning entirely – you simply have to show up.

Elephant Whispers in Hazyview is one of those experiences that’s genuinely hard to forget. Set on the banks of the Sabie River, this sanctuary is home to a small herd of rescued African elephants. Visitors are able to interact with them up close, guided by staff who know each animal’s history and personality. Its education paired with tactile emotion, and the setting along the river really is spectacular. Book ahead – the slots fill up quickly.

Also in Hazyview is Perry’s Bridge Reptile Park, which is wonderful for kids who are fascinated by things that make adults slightly nervous. Crocodiles, snakes, tortoises, lizards, spiders, all set in lush tropical gardens, with daily educational talks and crocodile feeding on Sundays. There are several restaurants and a playground nearby, so you can build a full morning around this visit.

Chimp Eden – The Jane Goodall Institute‘s chimpanzee sanctuary, offers guided tours to view rescued chimps in a 2500-acre natural reserve. It’s thoughtful, well-run and gives older children in particular something to think about long after they leave.

If you have three or four nights, dedicate a day to the Panorama Route. God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Blyde River Canyon – these are landscapes that are world famous and fascinating for the whole family.

For older children and teens, Induna Adventures in Hazyview offers quad biking, river rafting, zip-lining, archery, and paintball, all with solid safety standards and no shortage of energy.

The Lowveld National Botanical Gardens is a calmer alternative: 158 hectares of indigenous ecosystems, two rivers, waterfalls, and a remarkable diversity of birds. Perfect for a picnic afternoon when the week needs to breathe. Your picnic blanket, spread on the lawn under a shady tree, doubles as a comfy spot for an afternoon snooze.

(And yes, if lunch needs to be easy and everyone just needs to agree on something, there’s a Nando’s in White River that has saved many a family afternoon.)
